Give Turo a look.
Turo is a car rental company, you can either rent a car or post your own car up for rent. They have their own insurance coverage (just like any other rental car company) which you can opt in or out of, the cars come with a full tank, 1000 mile limit (typically), and clean just like you’d get from any other car rental company. The difference is, as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, someone owns that car. It may not be their daily driver, maybe they’re trying to pay it off quicker or make a couple extra bucks on the weekends when they don’t need it.
Whatever the case, it’s owned by someone. I tend to like this better as the level personal care is much more exemplified. I considered other rental car companies before going with Turo and to be fair the prices for their cheapest model was comparable to the lower spectrum of cars available on Turo. So, I asked the lady: new cheap car or slightly older, more fun car. We opted for the fun car.
2006 Mini Cooper S 10th Anniversary Edition. That was a fun car. I’m a tall guy, 6’4” to be exact and I was astounded that I fit as well as I did, but not just that I fit in the car, but how clean and easy it was to rent. Think of Airbnb for the car rental business. I think it’s a wonderful idea to give back to locals, that’s why my wife and I use Airbnb and now Turo.
THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE IS PROFESSIONAL, FAST, AND EASY.
I reserved the car, talked to the owner I was renting it from. When our flight landed we walked right out the doors into the premier garage and picked up the car. We started our trip in Raleigh, then Ocean Isle Beach, then Asheville, and up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway. We concluded our trip back in Raleigh to catch our flight home where we dropped the car off in the garage where it originated. 960 miles round trip.

Word to the wise though, if you’re going to rent an older car (not all of them are old) you run the risk of it having issues. We only had one. That one issue had us sitting at a gas station for about 30 minutes scratching our heads while two mechanics tried to figure out what we couldn’t. I texted the owner of the car throughout the whole ordeal. He was very apologetic, even offering to have someone come pick us up out in the middle of nowhere. He gave us a slight refund for the inconvenience, and was even willing to arrange an Uber to help get us to either our destination and back or to another place to get another rental car.
We eventually figured out the issue and got back on the road without any other problems. Having that assurance that we were being taken care of and I could communicate so easily with the owner about anything car related made the whole process much less stressful. The people that are renting out their cars may be trying to make a few extra bucks. That being said, if the experience isn’t good they’ll get a bad rap and ultimately affects their income. This system works well for both parties and is much different than using a rental company. Loyalty isn’t important to them and you just become another number with $$ in front.
LET’S SUM IT UP.
Our first experience with Turo was amazing, even with the one little glitch, and I definitely plan on using them again (I saw a Tesla Model S on there). If you ever wondered if it would be worth making the jump, do it. You won’t be disappointed. Whether you’re renting someone else’s car or renting out your own. Give them a shot, try something new, have a little fun, and give back to the community.
